Distance Learning was Cody’s second album, released after a period of change for the band. The title was deliberate – Cody were dispersed by distance, not just in different cities but now in different countries, rehearsing and recording separately. Not so unusual nowadays, but somewhat difficult in the pre-laptop era. Cody rose to the challenge with a more thoughtful, complex and musically ambitious collection, moving away from the relentless grooves and noisy climaxes of their debut towards a measured, layered and sometimes beautiful sound, with polemical or highly personal lyrics rubbing up against pulsing electronics, lush dreampop, and shadowy abstractions. Sombre and joyful at the same time, Distance Learning introduced a new set of musical contradictions for Cody to explore.
